Things to do
the island has no bad ideas
Whale Shark Snorkeling
Holbox is on the whale shark corridor — one of the best places on earth to swim alongside these gentle giants. Book ahead; the season kicks off in June but operators run early trips from mid-May.
💡 Choose a small-group tour for a more intimate experience.
Flamingo Tour
Hundreds of flamingos wade at Punta Mosquito and Laguna Yalahau, just a short boat ride from town. Dawn light turns everything gold.
💡 Go at sunrise — you'll have them almost to yourself.
Bioluminescence Night Tour
Kayak through warm water that glows electric blue around every paddle stroke. Millions of dinoflagellates light up the lagoon after dark.
💡 A new moon night gives the most vivid display.
Sunset at Roots Bar
Raíces (Roots) is Holbox's most beloved beachfront bar — bare feet in the sand, cold drinks, and a front-row seat to some of the best sunsets in Mexico. Gets lively after 6pm.
💡 Grab a hammock early — they go fast at golden hour.
Drinks at Luuma
A chic open-air beach bar with dreamy views across the lagoon. Great cocktails, a relaxed vibe, and the kind of lighting that makes every photo look good.
💡 The terrace tables face west — perfect for watching the sun go down.
Dinner at El Chapulim
The classic Holbox dining experience — fresh seafood, cold beer, and sand between your toes. Try the lobster pizza if it's on the menu; it's a local institution.
💡 Book ahead or arrive early — always busy in high season.
Golf Cart Island Loop
There are no cars on Holbox — just golf carts and bicycles. Rent one for the day and loop the whole island, stopping at secluded beaches like Punta Coco when the mood takes you.
💡 Head to the far western tip for near-total solitude.
Snorkel at Cabo Catoche
At the island's northern tip the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico converge, creating rich, clear water teeming with reef fish and manta rays.
💡 Only accessible by boat — join a day trip from the pier.
Cenotes Day Trip
The Yucatán's legendary freshwater sinkholes are a short trip from Holbox. Swim in crystalline water inside ancient limestone caves surrounded by jungle.
💡 Cenote Azul and Cenote Ojo de Agua are both close by.
Isla Pájaros
A protected bird sanctuary home to magnificent frigatebirds, roseate spoonbills, and dozens of other species. The short boat crossing is half the fun.
💡 Binoculars make a real difference here.
